Hello and welcome back. Is that Not the most motivating music that you can hear early in the morning? I think it is, that’s why we chose it. Well welcome back to Morning Mindset, and if it seems like I’ve got a lot of stories to tell, that’s because I do! *Laughs* I’ve got 3 decades worth of storytelling built up, of different experiences and I want to share some of those with you.

-

For instance, when I was a young teenager, I had a full-time job and things were going well. I was working 40 hours a week, I had benefits, it wasn’t what I wanted to do for a living but it was a good job. However I wanted a little bit more, something more, and back in the 1980’s learning wasn’t as prevalent as it is today (because there was no internet). We had telephones and we had the US postal service. But I started taking classes via correspondence from a school that had correspondence training, then you would travel to do residency training under the watchful eye of instructors.

-

So I started doing that, I signed up and got my books, 3 ring binders, took my tests. I mailed them back, and they mailed me the results. I know, could you imagine that in today’s world? Completing a written, paper test, putting it in an envelope, mailing it away and waiting a week or more for the results? *Whistle* I know folks, talk about “You don’t know the Struggle”, and once I was done with that I started my residency training. At the time I was living in Ohio, and the residency training was in Colorado. So what I had to do was get myself a plane ticket and get myself out there, and when I did that I was the ripe old age of 19.

-

Yes, I was 19 y.o. when I did this. This was my first big experience traveling on my own, without my family, my mom or dad saying “You should go do this”. No one told me, no one paid for it for me, I saved my nickles & dimes and did it myself. I got out of my little pond and I started seeing the world, and that’s something I’m gonna tell you, I’m gonna give that advice to you. I’m guessing some of you are older, and you’re listening to me and you’ve done that. But if you’re a younger person, you need to go do that thing.

-

Take the time to get out and see the world. Travel to other states, other countries, gain some experience. Now as a person who conducts training, I quite often run into questions from people potential students who will say “Well, you’re there and I live here. It’s a long distance, 1000 miles or whatever, when are you gonna be in my area?” Or I’ve heard many times, “If you ever travel to my area, I’ll take a class from you.” and I’m gonna tell you this. If you’re one of those people, “I’d love to take this class or training, but there’s no one in my area that teaches that. But if they ever travel to where I m, I’ll do it.”

-

That’s wrong, that’s wrong minded thinking, and I’ll tell you why. Alongside the class, you’re getting the value (which is something you can’t really put a price on) of leaving your little pond, your area that you’re comfortable in, and that’s great, we all get comfortable in our home towns. But you need to get out there, experience the world, travel, leave your little pond behind and get a new perspective on life. I’ve encountered people in my life who have done that, who have stayed in their town.

-

I’ve met people who were born in one area, and they grew up there and stayed there their whole lives. They assume that since they grew up there, got a job there, raised a family there, they assume that the rest of the world functions like their little pond does. That’s not necessarily the case. What you need to do, is you need to get out of your comfortable little pond, and expand your horizons. Maybe you’ll travel and say “Man, this place stinks. This place is crap and I’d never live here.”

-

Fantastic, at least you have something to compare it to. But you may think that your little pond is the best place ever and it has a lot to offer you, until you go outside and realize there are greater opportunities outside of your little pond. Ho does a fish grow? You say “Well… what do you mean? A fish grows by feeding it.” Have you ever seen a goldfish in a little goldfish bowl? Even if you haven’t had one, you’ve probably seen it.

-

Now if you took a goldfish and took it from a little, tiny bowl to a 5 gallon aquarium, and feed it like you were, it’ll grow. Did you know that? And if you put it in an even larger tank, it will grow even larger. But it can’t grow in that little, tiny bowl, it only has so much room. It won’t get larger. I’ve encountered goldfish that were 6-8-10 inches long, and they were Goldfish. Because they were moved from that little Goldfish Bowl, to a fish pond where they had lots of room. If you want to grow, every once in a while you’ll have to leave your pond behind, get out in the world, and do a little bit of growing.

-

So, if you really-really wanna take a training class, wanna learn something new, I don’t know what it is you want do. Learn to drive race cars! You know that race car driving school is 100 miles away, or 3 states over or what have you. Well if it’s a worthwhile experience, it’s worth it. Alright kids, that is all for today. I’m your host Paul Markel, and I’ll talk to you again, real soon.
