*Professor Paul*

Hello and welcome back to Morning Mindset. I feel like we're friends, I feel like you and I have been talking long enough, that I can share things with you. I sat down in my studio and recorded several Morning Mindset episodes only to find out later that the audio files were… well, for technical reasons we were not going to be able to use them.

-

So I am not in my studio now, I am somewhere else on the planet, but fortunately I do have my handy-dandy Zoom recorder and you'll have to forgive me if this sounds, a little bit different than normal. But because I'm not in my normal location, so we're going to Endeavor, to persevere. How’s that sound?

-

Alright, the the title of this one is Dealing with the Devil. How do we Deal with the Devil? That devil that crawls up on your shoulder, and recently I was in my home gym and I was engaging in strength training and I was following the program that my coach had prescribed for me. I get it on my phone.

-

He sends me my daily workout, or my workout for the day and this time I was going to be doing squats but instead of five sets, I'm sorry three sets of five. He increased the weight and he also increased the number of sets. So I went to five sets of three, and you say “Big deal, 15 is 15 is 15.”

-

Yes, but when you're doing heavy weight, you rest between sets, anywhere from four to five to six minutes or so between each set. So it takes a while, and then I had other things to do, and my wife came into the the gym, and she's like “Are you not finished it? What is, why is it taking you so long”, but I did everything that I was supposed to do and I admit it to her I said.

-

I have to, I was supposed to do five sets of three of these heavy squats, and after the third set, the devil, yes the devil crawled up on my shoulder after the third set and said, “You know, if you were to quit right now, no one would know.” That's right. The devil said “You did pretty good, you've already done three sets, who knows if you don't do the other two?”

-

I said get off my shoulder devil, and I finished. Now, I would venture a guess that many of you have the devil visit you on frequent occasions, the devil will climb up on your shoulder and say “No one's watching, don't worry about it” or “Take a break, or do it tomorrow. Tomorrow will always be here. Do it later. Go do something fun or enjoyable or relaxing or easy? Don't do the hard stuff now, wait until later to do it.”

-

That's the devil on your shoulder. Now, how do we Deal with that Devil? Want to talk about the concept of Delayed Gratification? We've mentioned it previously, but I don't want delayed gratification to be just a concept, and delayed gratification means doing the hard stuff first, before you do the easy stuff or the nice stuff or the things you want to do. For instance, super simple, eat your dinner and your vegetables first, and after that you get your dessert, right?

-

Basic five-year-old mentality, you want to sit and watch TV. But you know that you need to use this time to clean the garage out, because you're not going to have any time later on the week. So instead of going sitting and watching TV and drinking a beer, you go and do what you really didn't want to do, which is clean out the garage or mow the lawn or whatever, and then after that's completed, you reward yourself with the cold beer or the easy chair or the watching TV.

-

You say “Yeah Paul, that's that's really easy. It's like kindergarten stuff”, yeah, is it really now? When I said I want delayed gratification, not to just be a concept, I want you to put it into practice. Yes, uh, when you encounter that situation, that situation where you're at a Crossroads, you can either put off whatever you're supposed to do until later and go do something easy, or do something that you know is more fun, or you can well discipline yourself go do that thing that needs to be done. put off the gratification until later.

-

Then when you're when you finish the job, when you finished your tour, when you've done whatever, then reward yourself with a cold beer or ice cream or an app or whatever it is. Now here's the thing, the more often you practice and put into practice delayed gratification. The easier it will be for you to defeat that devil when that devil climbs up on your shoulder and says “Hey, no one's watching. You don't need to do that now, do it later. Go take a nap.” You say “Get off my shoulder devil, it'll be way easier to do what needs to be done, to be a productive human being, and to be happy about it.

-

So yes you, there are ways that you can deal with the devil that little devil that crawls up on your shoulder and starts whispering in your ear. Practice delayed gratification and the more you practice it, the more it will become a positive habit, and it won't seem like work. It won't seem like something that is difficult, it’ll seem like something that is natural.

-

In addition to you know, staying away from bad habits, we want to develop good habits as positive and productive individuals. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, the book “Morning Mindset: a 30 Day Plan for a More Positive and Productive Life” is available right now as a paperback on Amazon and in addition to that, the Kindle version is available right now, nd if you want both, well we did you a favor, you can go and buy the paperback version and get the Kindle version for free. How cool is that? Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I am your host Paul Markel and I will talk to you again, real soon.
