Hello, welcome back to Morning Mindset podcast. I am your host Paul Markel, and I certainly hope that you are appreciating my radio announcer voice. Kidding, I hope you're having a great morning or great afternoon or a great day. Whenever it is that you get the opportunity to listen to this show. Thank you very much for supporting this show and thank you very much for sharing it with other people so we can expand and spread the word spread the message get it out there.

-

There's so much negativity in our world. There's so much, so many people that are engaged in fear-mongering and scare tactics and they try and just scare you into, I don't know, being a subservient little slave, but we don't want that here. We want positive productive independent human beings make hay while the sun is shining how many of you have ever heard that. If you're a young Millennial style person there, you may have never heard “Make hay while the sun is shining”, but maybe you did.

-

Maybe you heard it once or twice, I used to hear this when I was young, when I was growing up like my parents, especially my dad was full of colloquialisms. He was full of things of phrases like “By the skin of your teeth” or uh, you know “Make hay while the sun is shining” and, I can't think of any others right now, but he used to say things like that and my grandparents used to say things like that.

-

Unless you live on a farm, you're probably thinking “Make hay while the sun is shining does not really apply to me and I don't even know how you make hay”, well you actually grow. Hay, or Alfalfa, but making hay while the sun is shining is both practical advice and it's also a philosophical advice.

-

Now I did spend some time, when I was a teenager, I spent several years on a farm in farm country in Ohio, and I was involved in the process of putting up hay in the barn for the winter. This is the way it works. The hay grows, the Alfalfa, the green stuff that's on the ground that the cattle eat, they don't eat straw okay? Cattle don't eat straw, you put straw on the on the barn floor and they poop on it.

-

But hay is actually full of nutrients and nutrition and it's green and generally it's Alfalfa and the cows eat it. Now normally during the summertime, you could put them out in the pasture and there in the grass and that's cool. But what happens when winter arrives and everything's frozen? The grass doesn't grow anymore and there's snow all over the ground. How do you keep the cattle fat and happy? You keep them fat and happy by feeding them all the hay that you mowed and raked and bailed and took and put up in the barn. You made the hay, and you did it while the Sun was shining.

-

Now why do you have to do make hay when the sun shining? Why can't you do it in the rain? Well, you don't want to do it the rain, because a number one. If you try and bale of hay that is wet, it'll be a mess and the Bales will be ridiculously heavy. Also, if it's really really wet soaking wet and you bail it you squish it all together in those cubes around bills or whatever and you put it up it can rot, right?

-

You don't want that. You don't want to do that. You want to make the hay while the sun is shining. You say “Okay, great Paul. I'm not going to be a farmer. I'm not a farmer, I don't care about the methods behind making hay.” Make hay while the sun is shining is not just about making hay, it's about taking opportunities when they present themselves. About taking advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself right then.

-

Not later, not tomorrow, not next week, not next year but taking advantage of that opportunity because it's there. Making hay when the sun is shining means “Hey you walk out, it's sunny today, we can get this done. I don't know if it's going to be sunny tomorrow or the day after that. It could rain, it could rain for a week and we've missed our opportunity, right? Be aware of wasting opportunities.

-

Now, from a practical standpoint, here where I live the weather can vary tremendously. It can go from very calm and sunny, to very windy, to rainy, to cloudy and if I want to go out in the field and I want to search for prairie dogs or jack rabbits or varmints or what have you, I need to do it when it's sunny.

-

But it may only be sunny for the morning. It may only be, the weather conditions. It may be really super windy like 30-40 mile an hour winds in the afternoon. If I waste that opportunity, then I won't have it. It'll be gone. There are many times when I will alter my schedule because the weather is nice and I'll do the indoor activities later.

-

Now it's not just about indoor and outdoor activities, is not just about being out in the sunshine. In your life, there will be opportunities. I don't believe there's anyone in the world that will not encounter opportunities for improvement or change value, but do we see these opportunities? Do we recognize them as such, and do we take advantage of them?

-

Are you ready to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves? It's not just that the opportunity is there and you see it. Are you, mentally and physically prepared to engage in that? Are you able to take advantage of that opportunity? You know that the very simple thing with the hay or the hunting or whatever maybe yeah, it's sunny and the opportunities there.

-

But there's no fuel in the tractor and I need to put a new battery in it anyway, and so on and so forth. You'd be a very, very bad farmer. You would be a poor farmer if the sun was shining but you couldn't get out into the field because you had never taken the time to replace the battery in the tractor, or you didn't have fuel, or you needed to change a tire. Like I didn't get that tire change and I know it's sunny, but I can't do it now.

-

That would be you wasting an opportunity. Not some point in your life, you're going to see an opportunity, an opportunity is going to present itself to you and you're either going to take advantage of it, or you aren't. If you want to take advantage of it, you need to prepare yourself right now, and be ready.

-

So when the opportunity arrives, you don't waste it. You will make the hay while the sun is shining. Alright folks, have a fantastic, wonderful, tremendous day. Have a productive and positive day. I'm your host Paul Markel and I'll talk to you again real soon.
